Bay Area Spark
Collective Workshops and
Chanting Circle
Presented by

Come enjoy the FireDance
community and find another home in the Bay Area for
your heart songs, your dance, your poetry, your
music. You do not have to be a good singer. You do
not have to know a
single chant. Just bring your enthusiasm and your spark. The
Bay Area Spark
Collective is a new flame, kindled from embers carried home from
fire circles around the country
─ an intentional
community group that meets monthly to celebrate spirit, community,
and each other. Workshops begin at 1:00
pm. Pot luck
supper begins at 4:00 pm. The sacred circle opens the doors at
6:30 pm. Participants introduce themselves and share their
magic; the four directions are called in; a chant is sung; and a
sacred play begins. From here on out, anything can happen:
drumming, a song, a poem, dancing,
magic, drawing, writing, massage, deep trance. As participants take their turns
around the circle, they stir the container and mix in their magic to create a
synergistic miracle in the space. Everyone listens to what the moment needs. Around 9:30 pm the energy of the circle rises to a fever pitch and then sweetly
winds down. The circle is closed with a chant, an "Om," that releases the four
directions
─ and plenty of hugs!
"Yoni ki Baat,"
translates loosely as "Talks about the Vagina." It's a
dramatic performance produced by
South Asian Sisters
and was originally inspired by
Eve Ensler's
renowned show The
Vagina Monologues
which was performed around the world, including in Pakistan and
India. But South Asian Sisters felt that putting on a
production of the original show simply was not enough. They
needed to create a space in which South Asian women could express
their own views on sexuality and their bodies
─
topics which are traditionally kept under wraps in their culture.
Like "The Vagina Monologues," the "Yoni ki Baat" production aims to
end the silencing so common around violence against women
─
but focuses on South Asian culture. Back by popular demand for
their sixth year now, South Asian Sisters present a brand new
theatrical script from the 2003-2006 scripts of the groundbreaking
Yoni Ki Baat productions. Brace yourself to experience moving,
sensational, disturbing, titillating, and hilariously raw
performances submitted by South Asian Women across the country!
South Asian Sisters is a diverse collective of progressive South
Asian women dedicated to empowering the South Asian community to
resist all forms of oppression through art, dialogue, conscious
alliances, and grassroots political action.
TheMagic Jester Theatre presents an evening of improv theater, music, and standup comedy
─an amazing, high energy show,
full of heart, and emotionally expressive!
And everyone is welcome to participate by suggesting story lines for
the actors. The performances will be entirely inspired
by YOU, the audience. This is community theatre at its best!
You, theatre guests of the evening, suggest a
brief story and the Theatre will create an improv play around it. And you
will be serenaded by
Stormy,
one of the East Bay's finest singer-songwriters, or
Mugg
who can really play the oldies on his guitar.
Don't miss this unforgettably
delightful and funny evening like
none other!

Wellstone Democratic
Renewal Club
Monthly Meeting
Presented by
Pamela
Drake
510-593-3721
This is the monthly meeting of
the Wellstone Democratic Renewal Club (WDRC). The Club
works to renew and reform the
Democratic Party. The evening
begins with a social hour and delicious pot luck supper at 6:00 pm
─
bring your favorite healthy dish to share!
At 7:00 pm the Club begins
its program
and all guests of the evening, members and non-members alike, are invited to participate in the discussions.
This evening's
program is about "Americans and the Climate Crisis:
Attitudes and Social Change." Wellstone's featured
speaker will be
Aaron Pope,
Director of
Sustainability
Programs, California Academy of Sciences.
Biodiversity, global warming and clean water were common
topics around the dinner table during Aaron's childhood
in the Bay Area. These conversations instilled in
him a lifelong commitment to the natural world.
Today he splits his time between content development and
managing the California Academy of Science's Green
Operations Initiative. He is especially interested
in climate change education, and helping the museum
empower and inspire visitors to protect the environment.
We are living in scary times. The dominant economy has never served
our interests, but now it literally threatens our lives. The
creativity that exists within our communities to meet our real,
daily needs in very practical ways must be stepped-up. The
times call for solidarity, for innovation, and for expansion of all
our efforts to build a better way of organizing our lives. We
must do this ourselves. With this
Grassroots Economy Festival
put on by
Just.Alternative.Sustainable Economics
(JASecon),
we believe we can demonstrate what’s possible by showing what has
already been accomplished. Bay Area cooperatives and
collectives, non-profit organizations, volunteer associations,
community-based financial institutions, and more, have organized
this Festival
─ 50
local, grassroots economic projects are represented. The
Festival's goal is to bring together a variety of economic projects
for the public to see close up and to appreciate the creativity and
value of bottom-up efforts to fulfill real needs.
